Tavoitteet
Upon completion the student should be able to:
- display knowledge of various formal features of poetic style (verse form, meter, diction, syntax, etc.) and apply this knowledge to the interpretation of individual poems
- identify major developments in the history of English-language poetry
- relate individual poems to broader socio-historical developments and contexts, and/or to particular theoretical perspectives
- present persuasive readings of poetic works linking formal features and poetic themes to a range of socio-historical and theoretical perspectives.
Sisältö
This course offers students a broad introduction to English-language poetry. It will offer both a historical survey of the development of English language poetry, and training in the formal or structural analysis of individual poems. Student will be exposed to theories regarding the form and function of poetry, and study relevant socio-historical contexts that can help to shape readings of individual poems from the 16th through the 21st centuries.
Toteutustavat
Lectures, guided discussions, problem-solving activities and other active learning tasks.
Variable teaching and learning methods: Lectures 12 h; group activities 16 h; independent study, reading and writing 107 h.
Suoritustavat ja arviointikriteerit
Assessment will be based on a portfolio and a term paper.
Arviointikriteerit
The course utilises a numerical grading scale (0–5). In the numerical scale zero stands for a fail.
