The Summer University of Northern Ostrobothnia was founded in 1951, and has regional offices in Oulu, Kuusamo, Raahe, Pyhäjärvi and Ylivieska. It is administered by the Summer University Foundation of Northern Ostrobothnia, and like the other summer universities in Finland, it is an institution for liberal adult education.
The summer university offers over 600 different courses annually. Some courses are one day courses, and others can last for several years. The summer university organizes open university courses, vocational education, hobby- and well-being courses and language courses. Most courses are suitable for all age and education groups, but there are some courses that are directed at adolescents or seniors.
